Concepts of the Clash of Arms (Combat RP and You!)
Hi.
Xixas here.
After being emotionally ripped in half like a lion on a squirrel for the past thirty years, impaled against a wall by one of my old retainers (why did I ever employ that kid? He's far too edgy for my court), and stabbed through the heart by the incarnate of creepy nightmares, I've found myself with quite a bit of time. I mean, one begets time when one is just a body.
As of late, the king of Regnum and his party have been up to trouble; from political power statements to literal genocide. It's rather obvious at this point that the city of Regnum is our biggest adversary. I find it no secret that many of you will be forced to draw your blades against a foe in the close future, and some of you might not be able to return home. Some of you might be lost. As such, I thought it appropriate to take time out of my busy schedule to instruct and advise those of you who would listen on the etiquette of combat RP in hopes of decreasing the amount of characters who might end up like me.
Well, let's begin. (Note-This will be a short post due to time restraints).

Well, let's begin. (Note-This will be a short post due to time restraints).
- Abilities and You!:
- Abilities, as we all know, are the core, heart, and soul of a character here on OVB. This section will be split up into two parts. Creation and use.
Creation: This one is actually a lot easier than people presume. Ability creation hangs on your ability to create a chain. An ability chain is two abilities that link together in use during combat to create a combo that will tip the scales in your favour. The trick is to always be three steps ahead. By that, I mean make abilities that combo with each other. Five separate abilities isn't necessarily a bad thing as it can potentially cover a wider variety of situations, but that isn't setting yourself up for victory. Combining abilities in a subtle manner is the key. The best ability combos are those that are useable in many situations but just SO HAPPEN to combine with each other. If you want an example, look at Sidus's abilities. Specifically his sword's ability and Raivara.
Use: This one is easy and can be summarized. Never use abilities in a way that leaves you vulnerable such as point blank hyper beams, running into close combat against a counter defensive fighter, or pretty much anything that puts you in range of an attack your currently active capabilities cannot counter. You need to be careful that EVERY move you make, there is a way for you to escape. Always be thinking of what can happen the NEXT post, not the current one.
- Cooldowns and You!:
- This one is probably the shortest but is important enough to merit its own section. Cooldowns. The amount of posts until your abilities are useable again. Cooldown management is very micro manage. It's generally hard to remember multiple cooldown counters at once and often leads to trying to use an ability while it's still on CD. Like using Shadow Lurk two times within three posts. Or using Shadow Lurk like ten times in five posts. Etc. I keep track of my CDs by keeping a paper by my side, or a notepad document, with all the abilities I have and their cooldowns. Keeps my mind refreshed that I can't use Shadow Lurk over and over.
Watching CDs is incredibly important inside combat. Never leave yourself without a defensive ability handy, even if you have to stall for cooldowns. Engaging while all your defenses and evasions are on CD is tantamount suicude.
- Strategy and You!:
- Strategy, tactics, and not stupidly attacking the strongest, FR-wielding character on the site when you don't even have IR. These are all traits of the mental stretch that spans across combat. First up, lay out what you know.
What type of magic do they have? What abilities do you know of? Do you know how they fight? If you have knowledge on any of these and your opponent doesn't, you automatically have an advantage. Especially fighting style. If you know of an opponent's style and what abilities they use in that style, such as a defensive counter fighter who flash freezes air to counter an assault, you automatically know (CANONICALLY ONLY) what to avoid.
Secondly, setting up. This is rather easy. Make a plan and stick to it. Bait out abilities, try to force them into CD and just whittle them down. Don't go for the kill or cripple every damn post. A lot of you do this. You try to get the killer move to hit or the heavy cripple every single post. A lot of people underestimate how useful and practical just damaging an enemy is. Small cuts, bruises and such eventually turn into lost blood. A cut shoulder leads to a slower arm. Multiple slices leads to distracting pain. Do not try to kill every single post. Small, calculated damage. It is possible to topple any Titan, no matter how powerful, if you crush their foundation.
