Troupe de Cartes Empty Troupe de Cartes

Post by Cedric Thu Sep 05, 2019 8:43 am

"Come one, come all!"

On the outskirts of a small town, trees overhead were decorated with strings of lights, jars containing unknowing magic dazzling the canopy with flashes and arrays of images. A grand tent made itself known in one of the rare spacious areas of the forest. Hung from the trees themselves, it barely looked out of place in the area- such a grand attraction would surely bring the townsfolk to it out of sheer curiosity.

"Troupe de Cartes shall host you all tonight! Expect yourself to be mesmerized by countless feats, meant to dazzle and astonish those who observe!"

A man hung upside down from one of the branches, a golden ribbon his only anchor as he swayed above an abnormally small crowd. As he moved, more and more threads seem to spread from the ribbon, creating a web-like display. His dark skin was almost ink against the bright clothes he wore, glowing blue marks hypnotically swaying over his flesh.

"Ah, viens prendre intérêt! Fret not, as many of Bright Ire's talents shall stride before you tonight." The announcer moved through the web in a series of slides and curves, dipping down to eye-level with the travelers. Despite the physical show, his thick accent never wavered or dipped from exertion.

A white-haired vagrant, the avoiding gaze of a starry owl, as well as the maiden sitting upon an edge captured his attention, silken threads dropping from the canopy to drape around their shoulders. Before the wanderer could shake it off, the web of gold before him dispersed in a flash of light- feathers of amber drifting away on some called wind. The announcer's crystalline gaze swept over the small gathering, a face of displeasure showing only for a split second at the small number.

With a snap of his fingers, members dressed in an array of dazzling silks and jewels seemed to appear from the lights themselves, surrounding the small gathering of souls, silken ropes springing from their outstretched arms to wrap in a netted fashion around the path- seemingly blocking any exit.

"Tonight's show is free! I am sure you shall all be pleased with the outcome, non? A reward shall accompany you upon exit- a thank you for your time and kind words of the Troupe!"

The announcer's smile was bright, as he carefully plucked the strand from the vagrant he had landed before previously. With a puff of smoke, he drew back the curtain.

"Entrez, s'il vous plaît."

The vagrant's eyes brimmed with trepidation from behind his goggles, all too aware of the lack of exits as he strode forward.

Why do I always attract weirdos. What magnet is attached to my soul for this abysmal luck.

Troupe de Cartes Empty Re: Troupe de Cartes

Post by Zechs Thu Sep 05, 2019 4:45 pm

“The world's beginning to weave another marvel..” Clasping her hands together underneath her cloak, she moved with poise while being caught and herded between the small group of people surrounding her as their pathway thinned. The imagery around them caught her attention's wander, flashes of her curiosity revealed in the shimmer of her eyes.
Beyond the glimpses of her face, the cloak she wore over herself hid her appearance completely, garnering odd attention wherever she went, the scythe on her back not helping her image. A rush of excitement filled her with the swirling caress of colors as she walked, forgetting those around her and eager to at least watch what the universe offered her, through the hand of this mysterious troupe.

The whimsical turn of her day held her attention firm, the massive tent before her offering a beckoning vibrancy that hooked her. Its otherwordly décor fascinated her, like a hidden world thriving in the cover of an ordinary existence.
Despite her polite demeanor, she was eager to get inside with ambitious moves to get past those in front, but the collective group's pace limited her own as they entered the tent. Its spacious size was noticeably bigger than what she saw outside when she finally passed the curtains, an odd sensation of visual disorder spiking through her.
Quick to separate, she broke off from the main group in swift but subtle movements, marveling at the sights the tent boasted with elegance in the intricate displays as she walked. “It's almost the size of Émeraudel..”

Taking her seat, she placed herself in the upper stands close to the tent walls, but the colors around her didn't help her desire to be hidden in the dark. With a sigh of mild discomfort, she began to hunch herself up, and bury her face in her feathers, raising her legs to her chest, only the golden gleam of her eyes visible from behind her hood, still held by the charming atmosphere. “Beautiful.”

Troupe de Cartes Empty Re: Troupe de Cartes

It was like a curtain of rainbows had fallen from the sky; this new world she entered was a veil of swirling colors, draped over Emeraudel's forestry like a blanket of jewels. To the fledgling wanderer, it was a sight unlike anything she'd seen before, a dream of vibrant fantasy that had been painted over the blank canvas of Ire. Lu's every sense was overwhelmed, and within that discordant crescendo of light and color, the young girl felt a kind of beauty that would never have been allowed in her homeland. It stunned her for what was a fleeting moment of appreciation,  mouth hanging agape and eyes gleaming like gemstones.

“Wow…”

Wordlessly, the girl in the white dress mouthed an expression of disbelief. Yet, as her eager steps led her deeper into the cavern of festive lights, she finally began to notice the gathering wall of bejeweled figures at the entrance. Their gesture was jovial, arms spread in warm invitation, even as their silken embrace formed a cage around the guests. But they were all faceless. Physically distinct, yet each expression was a mirror of the one to its side, like mass-produced puppets lined up for display.

That fleeting sight, hanging at the corner of her gaze, brought Lu back to her senses.

She’d been strung along by the magic of the evening, drawn to the colors like a moth to a flame. First, she was swept up by contagious intrigue and joy; now, she was being shepherded by the festive masses. Piercing through her mesmerized stupor, a sharp caution stabbed at the girl’s heart. She was now becoming aware of the fact that there was no way out of this dreamland, the only exit sealed by their generous hosts.

“Wh-why are...?”

And yet, she wanted desperately to believe in this magic, so childlike in its wonder. So, she stopped herself, midway through raising her hand, catching her question before the words fully escaped her lips. It’s probably nothing she told herself.

The young lady dressed in roses hadn’t been able to entirely conceal her bubbling concern.

Lu's ruby gaze danced around the interior. It sought something to settle on - for comfort, maybe. To her side, a cloaked figure was curled into a shadow, like a blot of ink on a colorful portrait. That one stood out the most, for better or worse. She shuffled, as discreetly as she could, in that direction, but remained silent. She wanted, first, to see where this all went.

Troupe de Cartes Empty Re: Troupe de Cartes

The announcer carefully watched the pace of his marks, eyes narrowed from the areas he had discovered their eyes wandering to. No matter... This shall only make the finale that much more satisfactory.

A grand blast of light was the only sign that the last guest had entered- the previous opening into the tent a thing of the past. What looked before like fabric now maintained the seamless image of golden walls- not a crack or hole in sight. Around the tent, the members of the Troupe began to leap- fabric stretching once more from their outstretched arms. The crowd gasped as they leaped from the ground, pulling themselves skyward in a dazzling display of magic. One of the members called upon water, holding orbs within the air for others to dance over. The colors and other magics reflected easily from these, a shimmering reflection of light and fire being tossed against the walls. When the Announcer stretched out his hand, the single tear that was over him collapsed into a mist- one that had been filled with some kind of incense by the troupe.

While crowd people argued over what scent it was, his crystalline eyes swept over the crowd, a smile playing upon the edge of his lips. The second act was beginning to close, as music from the center of the stage welled up into a crescendo- two twin members swaying with their stringed instruments. As they fell into silence, the lights dimmed- disappearing entirely.

The Vagrant's eyes dimly burned beneath his goggles and hood- alarmed at the sudden change of atmosphere. Not a single light- the meanings of this not lost upon him. No exit, no way to defend in a crowd like this- but no one seemed alarmed. Rather, the incense seemed to make him drowsy. I can't imagine the effect it's having upon them, then... Magic?

Upon his last thought, light returned. But, it was the reverse- the vibrant colors seemingly illuminating the inside of the tent themselves. The mist from before swirled into fog, condensing into a spiral once more to the center stage- where the Announcer stood. Slowly turning, the threads of gold he wore before now only a sash with beads and disks of glowing aquamarine. The sigils that crawled along his skin before returned brighter as he lowered his hands- cupping them together to pull the vapor to his face. As it fell away, the water condensed into a glass-like mask of blue and gold while still emitting that eerie light. The excess stayed in his hands as a glassy orb.

"Presque la fin! But, before we send you on your way, the end of the night is to have a reward. And, as such, we shall host a special event! Beneath three of your seats are cards. Once you find these Cartes, the Tarot will show you to us all- so do not try to hide it!" A wicked smile flicked between two members of the audience, before he turned once more to address the rest of the crowd. "I too shall partake, hm? And so it begins! Our incroyable volunteers shall partake in a logical test, one that will make their skin crawl. Who are they? And will others know? Can they possibly ignore the Troupe de Cartes while figuring out the puzzle, for the reward at the end?"

Kayden's eyes narrowed at this, seeking what intent hid behind such an odd game. All he could discern was a smile and empty words, so far.

"The rules are! The volunteers can ask each other whatever and however many they wish! Only four cards of the Tarot will be our guests- The High Priestess, The Chariot, The Tower, and Judgement! I myself shall have one, and to find out you can ask me any three questions you wish! Not mine alone, either. After the third, you may ask me to reveal what I have!" At the end of the statement, his eyes lifted up at the edges. Beneath the mask, it wasn't hard to imagine what kind of smile brought such a sick look to them, as he finished his sentence. "Ah, yes. Don't bother trying to cheat! The cards don't like their fun being ruined, mm?"

At that, he slowly lifted his card, showing the back to the audience. Kayden's eyes swept among the rest of the crowd, mentally cursing his luck. Slowly, moving his hand beneath his plush chair, he had his fears confirmed. As soon as he touched the edge of the thick card, bright mist gathered around him- pulling him below the floor to the gasps of seven audience members. Flinching, he swallowed away the nausea, finding himself on the stage before the Announcer.

Of course... So that means that those who are skilled will likely be drawn beside me.

Looking up, the Antithei pulled his scarf down from over his mouth to hold the back of his draw to the audience.

Troupe de Cartes Empty Re: Troupe de Cartes

Nieves observed closely the happenings around her, discerning the minute details and returning nothing. No one else seemed out of ease, and while she couldn't really determine the atmosphere, her own self couldn't completely soften. The lights that drifted around her and kept her from discretely observing continuously weaved that mild discomfort in her mind.

The start of a battle comes from the mind, don't let it past your walls and it can't interfere..

Nieves tightened her hand's grasp to each other, resisting the urge to check her own seat for the card. Perhaps if the crowd had been larger, her worries could be drowned by forced obliviousness, but as she scanned the scarce seats of the crowd, she only saw one unfortunate boy get swept to the stage.
But as the time fled from the brief moment that seemd like an eternity, no one else had had found anything. Noting her location, she gave herself up to the all but confirmed idea that it was planned from the start.

I lost.

She felt her card with a tinge of despair, holding it up to view the image as a mocking sigil to her disdain. Heaving a sigh, she fell through the motions the other boy had done, in a flash she was standing on the stage, but her concern was taken elsewhere before the moment had passed.
An unfamiliar sensation drifted across her skin, a feeling that sent her mind into a race. A breeze. Sudden freedom of space sent a horror through her body, feeling her wings unfold into a stretch. Her cloak was gone.

Troupe de Cartes Empty Re: Troupe de Cartes

And the last one is...

By this point, Lu had already resigned herself to the festive whims of the night. No third guest had burst onto the stage in the time between the announcement and now, so there could be no question as to which seat the final card had been planted beneath. Gently, she traced two fingers beneath the surface of her chair.

Her heart was pounding. It beat against her rib cage like a war drum. More than fear, it was a rhythm of acceptance and anticipation, the beat that preceded the dance. It was the song of her core, which hungered for this sense of adventure and mystery, and despite all previous concerns, wanted to see just what spectacle the Troupe de Cartes had in store.

I'll play your game, mister. Show me something dazzling.

Her fingertips brushed against the card's edge, and just like the others, she burst onto the stage in a flash of light.

Staggered at first, the foreign girl eventually found her balance on the stage's surface, and cast her gaze to the eager eyes of the audience. She imagined she was staring at a hundred scattered jewels, no expectations or judgment glimmering in their glassy reflections. It made it easier to muster her dormant showmanship, and give those jeweled eyes a petite bow, palm held open beneath her chest and a hand behind her back. With a smile, she finally turned to face the other guests.

The vagrant and the shadow, standing beside her. In particular, she threw a glance at the uncloaked woman, her gentle gaze trailing along the feathered surface of her wings. Could she be-?

"So, erm, we're to ask questions, yes? Why don't we start with names, then~?"

A pointed invitation at the two of them, beckoning their participation in this final act. It was important to enjoy what life threw at you, though Lu questioned whether there was any choice in the matter.

Troupe de Cartes Empty Re: Troupe de Cartes

As the third guest entered the stage, the Announcer spread his arms wide. Rather than dropping, the crystal he held before evened itself between the three guests- gently turning in the air before them. "Delightful! A feather takes leap at the gust before it!"

The lights dimmed once more, sending an eerie glow from the colors. Kayden's eyes cast out vibrantly, amplified by the results of the magic. Before him were two very, very different individuals. One seemed to physically shy away, unable to escape the eyes of many upon her. The other seemingly embraced the situation, arms open for the path laid before her.

Slowly, he removed his hood. The same odd orange light came from a streak in his hair, surrounded by glowing white. The goggles he chose to leave on, unsure whether fully unveiling his face would be opportune at this time.

"...You didn't give yours. Kayden."

Shifting his weight, the Antitheu crossed his arms uncomfortably. The eyes of every audience member seemed to bore into the trio, something he's never been good with. Attention...

"... Why are you here."

The question wasn't aimed at any direct member of the two, but rather initiated to give them a chance to speak. Maybe even ease the feeling of forced camaraderie. A one on one feeling gave him ease, some ability to pretend they weren't surrounded by exitless golden walls.

In the background, quiet music picked up once more.

Troupe de Cartes Empty Re: Troupe de Cartes

Post by Zechs Wed Sep 18, 2019 12:07 pm

Nieves's body shuddered twice over, struggling to maintain a confident composure. At the top of the stands, she saw her scythe and cloak neatly together. Her own attire was disheveled and messily put together, flowing and loose robes that gleamed with the lights around them from their silken and reflective material, their white and emerald color faintly glowing.

The flash of their third snapped her attention away, gaining applause from the small crowd as she appeared. “So does that make all of us?”
The rules given finally started to sink into her understanding, taking a few glances around the room. Her thoughts molded with what she saw, and her focus taken away for a moment.

“--Names”

“Questions? A few.”

“--Kayden.”

“Home sounds really nice..”

“--Why are you here.”

Slowly coming back to the scene at hand, Nieves took a moment to put what she heard in its place, giving the boy next to her his name, and the newest comer as this game's initiator.
“Names? Mine's Nieves.” Taking a pause to get a clean look at the two, she was truly eager to meet them, even through a less than ideal method to her. “My story here was rather boring, but our paths crossed for a reason, I like to believe.” A smile followed her hushed words, looking between them both.
“You seem like this isn't your first time." She jokingly spoke to the woman who hadn't given her name, yet.
